Chanukah Hot Cocoa Board

Nov 30, 2020 · Leave a Comment

Hot Cocoa Boards have been super popular on Pinterest this season and I was so inspired but the talented Rebekah Lowin who created a beautiful Chanukah Candy Board, I just had to put the two trends together!

Gather some mugs with hot milk and some whipped cream, of course, and have the coziest night-in by the candle light this Chanukah!

What is a hot cocoa board?

Boards are having a moment, wouldn’t you say? Some boards you may have seen in the last couple of years:

Charcuterie Boards, cheese boards, bagel and lox boards, candy boards, breakfast boards, falafel boards, salad boards… (ok I might be making some of these up as I go along, but bear with me, these are some great ideas) and most recently Hot Cocoa boards!

Basically everything you need to make hot cocoa is arranged beautifully on a board for a stunning display and easy, fun creating!

Chanukah Hot Chocolate

I added a Chanukah twist to my hot cocoa board because there is nothing more cozy than sitting around the Chanukah candlelight with the family and enjoying a hot chocolate made with chocolate coins!

What products do you need to create this board?

Below I list all the (Israeli) products I used to create my Chanukah Hot Cocoa Board. BUT – you don’t need to use these specific ingredients, feel free to follow these basic guidelines for creating your own hot chocolate board:

Guidlines for Hot Chocolate Board

  • Chocolate: I used Chanukah gelt (chocolate coins) in milk chocolate
  • White Chocolate: I used white “mekupelet” or flaky chocolate
  • Chocolate Truffles: I used milk chocolate truffles wrapped in metallic blue wrappers
  • Chocolate Syrup: I used Hershey’s chocolate syrup
  • Marshmallows: I used mini white and blue marshmallows
  • Cookies/Sticks: I used “elite” brand chocolate covered sticks, “maklot” in Hebrew, the regular ones and the “kif-kef” ones and vanilla wafer rolls
  • Chocolate covered pretzels: I used white chocolate “ego” brand
  • Meringue Kisses: I used blue neshikot
  • Chocolate lentils: I used gold covered chocolate lentils

You can use all or any of the items listed above or different variations (milk chocolate covered pretzels instead of white chocolate ones for example).

How to assemble a hot cocoa board?

  1. Gather all your products, a large round or rectangular board and some small bowls.
  2. First decide which items you want to serve in bowls depending on their sizes. Fill those and place them on your board.
  3. Next start with one item, and place it anywhere on the board.
  4. Move around the board and continue adding the items as you see fit. Try and alternate colors, shapes and sizes of the items so that there is variety.
  5. Feel free to place one item more then once (in this photo I have the chocolate coins in two spots) to break it up.

How to serve your hot chocolate board?

I recommend serving your hot cocoa board with some mugs of hot milk and lots of whipped cream!!

How to use your hot cocoa board?

Warm up some mugs of milk in the microwave (one per person) and have each family member choose what they want to add to their hot cocoa. First you need some chocolate, so you can choose the chocolate gelt (coins), white chocolate, chocolate syrup or all three!

Then you can top your mugs with any toppings you like: mini marshmallows, pretzels, wafer sticks etc…

Most importantly, HAVE FUN & make memories!

Happy Chanukah!

Yesterday I got a new identity.
In addition to daughter, wife, friend, sister, mother, now I’m also a soldiers mother.
And I’m sure over the next 10 years or so I’ll learn more about this new role, and evolve in my new identity.
But today, on day 2 of this new me, I’m just acknowledging the milestone.
Thank you so much to all of you for all the love you’ve sent our way! We really appreciate it 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

This post was written before the war. And honestly This post was written before the war.
And honestly, feels so trivial and strange now. But, also, still relevant. So I’m sharing it anyway ❤️

✨1k✨

Creators often celebrate their follower count, when they hit big milestones, as they should!

But this is a different kind of milestone for me and it’s a super cool one.

This is my 1000th post on IG!

I opened this account in 2017 as a business account.

At the time it was an events business page and I even had professional pictures taken for it!

In the years since those first posts I had an events business, a bakers box subscription business, a bakers blog, a food photography business and most recently, a Stop Motion Business.

Woah. That’s a lot.

This is what the narrative in my head tells me about starting and stopping so many businesses:

✨ why can’t you just stick to one thing
✨ it’s embarrassing to keep trying and “failing”
✨ are you sure you should even be in business
✨ you’re a failure
✨ stop trying new things

I could probably go on.

But here’s what starting and stopping so many businesses really says about me:

✨ you are so BRAVE
✨ you are so TALENTED
✨ you can do anything you want to do
✨ you are resourceful and resilient
✨ you are CREATIVE

Even though sometimes (less and less as time goes on) I deeply feel the first list, I know the second list is true and I’m so proud of where I am today and of my 1000th post.

Especially in this dark time we need to bring the light into this world.

I was inspired by @israelwitharky’s first video he sent out at the beginning of this war - reminding us to be the light ✨

I’m in need of this reminder more than anyone. But the Baal Shem Tov said “even a tiny amount of light can dispel a lot of darkness”.

Every smile, good deed, good word, helping hand, is bringing in more light 🙌🏻 this is how we win!

✨How did you do that?!✨ One of my favorite qu ✨How did you do that?!✨

One of my favorite questions!!

The behind the scenes you *DON’T* see here…

I’m not going to lie, coming up with the concept was and always is the hardest part of stop motion for me!!!

Once I have the idea (and I’m excited about it!) I get in the zone and just create!

But that makes it sound so easy. The reality is it can take hours, or even days, of agonizing over what to do. How to portray it, what do I want it to look like, feel like.

That process drives me crazy sometimes and I almost panic over it. It’s not pretty. But then, *seemingly* out of nowhere (after hours of discussing it with @tam_man177, my husband, my kids, anyone that will listen) the concept will pop into my head (where was it the whole time?!!!!) and I’ll run with it.

That’s what happened with this one.

I knew I wanted to retell the Lekach story that I’ve shared here over the years but I didn’t want it to be the same. When I had the idea of making it a recipe video I wasn’t sold. I knew I didn’t want to follow a recipe in stop motion. It just wasn’t the look and feel I had envisioned for this.

But I was stumped.

And I just sat in my studio staring at my camera and freaking out. I was so close, I could feel it. But what is it?!?!?

That’s when I looked over to my prop shelf (which got a major clean out this summer) and I saw this cake pan I bought a few years ago and never used. I knew it would be perfect.

When I picked it up, I noticed that from the top down, you wouldn’t be able to see the beauty of the dish, since it is two toned and you could only see that from a side view.

💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡💡

That was it! I immediately knew what I wanted to do. From there everything else fell into place!

✨Lekach✨ Every year, since I was a child, my ✨Lekach✨

Every year, since I was a child, my father would come home from synagogue on erev Yom Kippur with some honey cake.

He asked me and my brothers to come to him and say:

“give me lekach”

and he would give us each a piece of cake and bless us:

“May this be the only thing you have to ask for this year”.

As we continue the tradition and ask for “lekach”, I wish for all of us that in this upcoming year Hashem bless us with everything we need without having to ask.

Ps- this year I used the lekach recipe from the incredible @avishagsy it’s in her highlights 🙌🏻

So when we discussed a stop motion to showcase on big screens at the event (watch till the end to see!!) and Esther gave me free reign and said the magic words that I love to hear “I trust you!”, I was soooo excited to create something amazing!

✨Then & Now✨ Sharing one of my first ever sto ✨Then & Now✨

Sharing one of my first ever stop motions and comparing it to my most recent one 🍋🍋🍋🍋

Amazing what 4 years can do!

Besides practice, these 3 things really helped me up my stop motion game:

1. Lighting: back then I was only using natural light which fluctuates between each shot causing a flickering or even completely different coloring. Once I switched to artificial light (learned from the best, Joanie @thebiteshot) I was able to control the lighting and get an even, seamless light.

2. @dragonframe.software: when I started using Dragonframe stop motion software everything changed! The onion skin feature lets me know what my exact last shot was and I can move things accordingly.

3. Curiosity:Being curious about movement and studying objects and how they move helped me understand how to make my subjects move more seamlessly in stop motion.

4. Practice!!! I know I said besides for practice, but i can’t write this list without starting the obvious. Practice is the biggest factor in improving any craft, and being willing to try and put your work out there even when it’s completely imperfect (which my work still is today!) is the best way to grow.

I hope this epic before & after inspires you to keep creating!

✨How I made this Stop Motion✨ 🍎🍯 Creati ✨How I made this Stop Motion✨
🍎🍯

Creating a Happy New Year stop motion out of apples and honey was challenging and time consuming, but I LOVE how it came out!

Here I’m breaking down for you exactly how I did it:

1️⃣ First I designed the text on @canva . I had a general idea of how I wanted it to look and I played around with fonts and images (the word sweet was a graphic!) until I got it exactly right!

2️⃣ Uploaded the graphic “sweet” to Cricut Design Space and used my @cricut_il to cut it out on white card stock.

3️⃣ Starting with the honey bc I wasn’t sure how or even if it would work! I used a small squeeze bottle to carefully cover the white card stock with honey. My bff @tam_man177 helped me with this part!
(Spoiler: it worked!!)

4️⃣ Cut up a bunch of different colored apples into tiny cubes. I had no idea how many I would need so I cut a whole bunch extra (don’t worry, the extra didn’t go to waste, whatever I didn’t use went into an apple cake for the holiday!)

5️⃣ I used the text design I had created as a reference layer in @dragonframe.software and wrote out the rest of the text in tiny apple cubes! I played around a bit with the colors too! 🍏🍎

6️⃣ Finally I Animated!! I moved the tiny apple cubes away piece by piece to create the effect of them flying in and out!

7️⃣ Then I edited all the photos in @lightroom and put it all together in Premiere Pro.

8️⃣ Then I spent HOURS agonizing over which audio would work best, didn’t want lyrics bc I wanted it to be holiday-y but also wanted something trending and cool that also went with the video…. Ahhhhhhhhhhh

Head to my feed to see the final video and tell me what you think - was it worth it??
